{"id":462,"date":"2008-09-19T23:01:34","date_gmt":"2008-09-20T06:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/strivetoenter.com\/wim\/?p=462"},"modified":"2015-10-19T20:28:21","modified_gmt":"2015-10-20T03:28:21","slug":"is-a-womans-voice-filthy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/strivetoenter.com\/wim\/2008\/09\/19\/is-a-womans-voice-filthy\/","title":{"rendered":"1 Corinthians 14, is a woman&#039;s voice filthy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<body>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/strivetoenter.com\/wim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/quiet.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-464 aligncenter\" title=\"Quiet\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/strivetoenter.com\/wim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/09\/quiet.jpg?resize=243%2C350&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"350\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the last post we talked about how there is no \u201claw\u201d in the Old Testament scriptures that forced women to be silent in the assembly so the reference in 1 Corinthians 14:34, 35 had to be some other \u201claw\u201d that forced silence on women.\u00a0 The \u201claw\u201d that silences women is found not in God\u2019s law, but in the oral tradition of the Jews, now written down in the Talmud.<\/p>\n<p>The next red flag that points to another source other than God\u2019s law, for the saying in verses 34 &amp; 35 is the charge that a woman\u2019s voice is filthy.\u00a0 Verse 35 says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1 Corinthians 14:35\u00a0 If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home;for it is improper for a woman to speak in church.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The word translated as \u201cimproper\u201d is shameful or filthy.\u00a0 Is a woman\u2019s voice shameful?\u00a0 Is a woman\u2019s voice filthy?\u00a0 The oral law of the Jews said her voice was indecent, filthy and shameful.\u00a0 A woman was not allowed to speak in their congregations for the sake of the men.\u00a0 Her voice was considered a sexual enticement thus a woman was not to speak publicly.<\/p>\n<p>Did God\u2019s word also say anywhere that a woman\u2019s voice is filthy, shameful or indecent as the Jewish oral tradition taught?\u00a0 No, it doesn\u2019t.\u00a0 In fact Paul earlier on in chapter 14 said that everyone was allowed to prophesy in the assembly.\u00a0 If everyone could prophesy, then certainly Paul would not turn around in just a few verses and say that women\u2019s voices were to be silenced because they were filthy.<\/p>\n<p>Tradition is a very strong force in people\u2019s lives.\u00a0 Prejudice follows such tradition and causes many of us not to want to hear a woman\u2019s voice speaking the truth of God\u2019s word.\u00a0 Instead of following tradition, we should see what God\u2019s word says about women publishing the truth.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Psalms 68:11\u00a0 The Lord gives the command; The women who proclaim the good tidings are a great host.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The word \u201cproclaim\u201d means to publish or make public.\u00a0 God says that there is a great host of women who will take the gospel to the public.<\/p>\n<p>How about you?\u00a0 Have you had any prejudice against women\u2019s speaking forth the Bible?\u00a0 Have you considered their words to be inferior in some way or their preaching to be invalid merely because they are women?<\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the last post we talked about how there is no \u201claw\u201d in the Old Testament scriptures that forced women to be silent in the assembly so the reference in 1 Corinthians 14:34, 35 had to be some other \u201claw\u201d that forced silence on women.\u00a0 The \u201claw\u201d that silences women is found not in God\u2019s law, but in the oral tradition of the Jews, now written down in the Talmud.
