The body of Christ is a body ministry where each of us are needed and each gift that God has distributed among us is needed.\u00a0 So why is it that many men say that they do not need for a woman teacher when this personal rejection of their own need is contradicted by 1 Corinthians 12:21?<\/p>\n

1 Corinthians 12:21 (NASB95)<\/p>\n

21<\/sup><\/span>And the eye cannot say to the hand, \u201cI have no need of you\u201d; or again the head to the feet, \u201cI have no need of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Why does the Bible say that the eye cannot say<\/strong><\/em> to the hand that others may need you, but I<\/strong><\/em> have no need of you<\/strong><\/em>?\u00a0 In other words, why is it that some say what the Bible says they cannot say<\/strong><\/em>?\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Greek term for \u201ccannot\u201d is the negative of dynamai which is one\u2019s ability or capability of doing something, thus the term \u201ccannot say\u201d should mean that the eye has no personal ability to say something.\u00a0 Kittel\u2019s Theological Dictionary gives an expanded understanding of what it means to not be able to do something:<\/p>\n

Words of this stem all have the basic sense of ability or capability. dynamai means a. \u201cto be able\u201d in a general sense, b. \u201cto be able\u201d with reference to the attitude that makes one able, hence sometimes \u201cto will,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> and c. (of things) \u201cto be equivalent to,\u201d \u201cto count as,\u201d \u201cto signify.\u201d<\/p>\n

With this meaning, we can understand that the reason why the eye cannot say to the hand \u201cI don\u2019t need you\u201d is that the eye has no power through its own will<\/em> to make the hand unneeded.\u00a0 It isn\u2019t that the part of the body known as the eye cannot utter<\/em> these words to another part of the body.\u00a0 In fact these words are said often enough in the Church.\u00a0 When it comes to men claiming that they<\/strong><\/em> don\u2019t need women teachers, these words are not uncommon.\u00a0 Instead of an inability to say<\/strong><\/em> the words, it is an inability to will it to<\/strong> be so<\/strong><\/em> by the mere fact of one\u2019s claim.\u00a0 The eye\u2019s claim to not need the hand has no effect on the eye\u2019s need<\/strong><\/em> nor does the eye\u2019s claim take away<\/em> the usefulness of the hand for the good of the eye.<\/p>\n

Another thing that is noteworthy in the grammar is that the term \u201ccannot say\u201d is either middle or passive.\u00a0 The middle voice signifies that the subject of the verb is being affected by its own action or is acting upon itself.\u00a0 Could it be that the eye is being affected by its own claim to not need another body part?\u00a0 The eye has no power to make the hand not needed, but the mere fact that it confidently claims that it has no need of the hand, is affecting its own well-being, for to deny that you have a need makes you blind to God\u2019s provision for that need.<\/p>\n<\/body>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
