{"id":1175,"date":"2009-07-14T22:47:31","date_gmt":"2009-07-15T05:47:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/strivetoenter.com\/wim\/?p=1175"},"modified":"2015-10-19T20:26:26","modified_gmt":"2015-10-20T03:26:26","slug":"wayne-grudem-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/strivetoenter.com\/wim\/2009\/07\/14\/wayne-grudem-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Wayne Grudem &#8211; answering part 4 of his \u201cOpen letter to Egalitarians\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<body>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1143\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mmoutreach.org\/wim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/wayne_grudem.jpg?resize=341%2C430\" alt=\"wayne_grudem\" width=\"341\" height=\"430\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>This is the part 4 of answering Wayne Grudem\u2019s \u201c<a title=\"Wayne Grudem's Open Letter to Egalitarians\" href=\"http:\/\/rolecalling.blogspot.com\/2007\/04\/open-letter-to-egalitarians.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Open letter to Egalitarians<\/strong><\/a>\u201d and his \u201cSix\u00a0Questions That Have Never Been Satisfactorily Answered\u201d. \u00a0Today I am posting his fourth question, <strong><a title=\"Suzanne McCarthy refutes Wayne Grudem\" href=\"http:\/\/powerscourt.blogspot.com\/2008\/06\/response-open-letter.html\" target=\"_blank\">Suzanne McCarthy\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> answer from the Greek and my own questions below that. \u00a0My blog does not yet have the ability for me to use the Greek fonts so I have included a link to Suzanne\u2019s article that has the Greek.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Wayne Grudem\u2019s Question #4:<!--more--><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. authenteo:<\/strong> In 1 Timothy 2:12, Paul writes, \u201cI permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men.\u2019\u2019 Many of you claim that the word translated \u201chave authority\u2019\u2019 (authenteo) means \u201cmisuse authority\u2019\u2019 or \u201cdomineer\u2019\u2019 (or even \u201cinstigate violence\u2019\u2019) in this sentence, so that Paul is not prohibiting women from having authority over men, but he is prohibiting women from misusing authority or domineering over men.<\/p>\n<p>Our problem is this: we have never seen any clear example in ancient Greek literature where authenteo must mean \u201cdomineer\u2019\u2019 or \u201cmisuse authority.\u2019\u2019 Whenever we have seen this verb occur, it takes a neutral sense, \u201chave authority\u2019\u2019 or \u201cexercise authority,\u2019\u2019 with no negative connotation attaching to the word itself. We are aware that a related noun, authent\u00afes, has several different meanings, but that is not the word Paul used, and we are interested in the word that Paul actually used. So our question is this: Will you please show us one example in all of ancient Greek where the verb authenteo means what you claim, namely, \u201cmisuse authority or domineer\u2019\u2019 (or even \u201cinstigate violence\u2019\u2019)?<\/p>\n<p>If you can show us one example, we would be happy to consider your interpretation further. But if you cannot, then we suggest that you have no factual basis for your interpretation of this key verse, and we respectfully ask that you stop writing and speaking as if you did, and that you also reconsider your understanding of these verses.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em> Suzanne McCarthy\u2019s answer to Wayne Grudem using Greek sources:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Authenteo \u2013 1 Timothy 2:12 \u201cto have authority\u201d or \u201cto dominate\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Dr. Grudem writes,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Our problem is this: we have never seen any clear example in ancient Greek literature where authente? must mean \u201cdomineer\u2019\u2019 or \u201cmisuse authority.\u201d Whenever we have seen this verb occur, it takes a neutral sense, \u201chave authority\u2019\u2019 or \u201cexercise authority,\u2019\u2019 with no negative connotation attaching to the word itself.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">It was originally thought that there were two occurrences of\u00a0<em>authenteo<\/em> preceding the epistle to Timothy. Here is the first one,<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Philodemus (1st cent. BCE): \u201cOught we not to consider that men who incur the enmity of those in authority are villains, and hated by both gods and men\u201d;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">In fact, this is from a reconstructed fragment. The text cited is from a short summary of the reconstructed text. It is not a translation and there is no connection between the reconstructed phrase<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">and \u201cthose in authority.\u201d [The reconstructed phrase]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">occurs near the beginning of the fragment, and \u201cthose in authority\u201d is at the end of the summary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">The only other occurrence of\u00a0authenteo during this period is provided by Grudem as,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">BGU 1208 (27 BCE): \u201cI exercised authority over him, and he consented to provide for Calatytis the Boatman on terms of full fare, within the hour.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">In fact, the translation \u201cexercised authority over\u201d is not the usual translation for\u00a0authenteo in this citation. Other scholars suggest \u201cprevail on\u201d \u201ccompel\u201d and \u201cmade him.\u201d In the footnote of Evangelical Feminism and Biblical Truth, page 680, Dr. Grudem mentions that this letter refers to a \u201chostile\u201d relationship, and the meaning \u201ccompel\u201d seems appropriate. If it is a hostile relationship, then one presumes it has a negative connotation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Here is a clearly negative use of the word\u00a0authenteo from the 2nd\/3rd century,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Wherefore all shall walk after their own will. And the children will lay hands on their parents. The wife will give up her own husband to death, and the husband will bring his own wife to judgment like a criminal. Masters will\u00a0lord it over their servants savagely, and servants will assume an unruly demeanour toward their masters.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: none;\"><a title=\"Hippolytus, On the End of the World\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/fathers\/0504.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Hippolytus, On the End of the World 7<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/fathers\/0504.htm\" target=\"_blank\">.<\/a><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Clearly\u00a0<strong><em>authenteo<\/em><\/strong> has an negative connotation. It is the way a master rules a slave. Is this the proper exercise of authority in the church?
