{"id":1054,"date":"2009-06-15T14:09:48","date_gmt":"2009-06-15T21:09:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/strivetoenter.com\/wim\/?p=1054"},"modified":"2016-12-13T21:45:12","modified_gmt":"2016-12-14T04:45:12","slug":"semigalitariansim-and-feminist-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/strivetoenter.com\/wim\/2009\/06\/15\/semigalitariansim-and-feminist-air\/","title":{"rendered":"Semigalitariansim, undercover enemy and &quot;feminist air&quot;"},"content":{"rendered":"<body>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1064\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mmoutreach.org\/wim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/fight-7.jpg?resize=323%2C333\" alt=\"fight-7-cheryl-schatz\" width=\"323\" height=\"333\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h1>Semigalitarianism, Undercover Enemy and \u201cfeminist air\u201d<\/h1>\n<p>When does explaining God\u2019s Word make one an enemy of the church?\u00a0 According to Mike Seaver, a woman who is allowed to teach the Word of God to men, even if she is under the authority of her husband and even if she has received authority from her pastor to teach the Bible (and assuming her pastor is monitoring her teaching), is like a drunken adulterer ministering to God\u2019s people.\u00a0 [Mike Seaver has written\u00a0<strong><a title=\"Semigalitarianism the Church's Undercover Enemy by Mike Seaver\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbmw.org\/Blog\/Posts\/Semigalitariansim-The-Church-s-Undercover-Enemy\" target=\"_blank\">a blog post at CBMW<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0identifying the issue of women teaching the bible to men as the undercover enemy of the church.\u00a0 Mike is a pastor at CrossWay Community Church in Charlotte, North Carolina and regularly posts at\u00a0<strong><a style=\"color: #774199; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/rolecalling.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Role Calling<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">see\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Semigalitarianism the church's undercover enemy by Mike Seaver\" href=\"http:\/\/rolecalling.blogspot.com\/2007\/09\/semigalitariansim-churchs-undercover.html\" target=\"_blank\">his original article here<\/a>.]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Seaver the church has been breathing \u201cfeminist air\u201d and this has caused many churches to become \u201csemigalitarian\u201d. \u00a0[According to Seaver, semigalitarianism is defined as those people (both men and women) who say that a woman should not be allowed to preach in a church on her own authority, but if she claims to be under the authority of her senior pastor (who is a man) and under the authority of her husband (who is obviously a man) then it is okay for her to teach men in the church.] \u00a0But while Seaver is complaining of \u201cfeminist air\u201d, he has unwittingly become infected with a \u201cdisease\u201d that allows Christians to see passages of scripture as \u201cclear\u201d (1 Timothy 2:12-13) instead of as a complex passage in its complete context (1 Timothy 2:11-15).<\/p>\n<p>The attitude of identifying godly women as enemies of the church is clearly an aggressive stand equating a woman explaining the meaning of the scriptures with a drunken adulterer. \u00a0It reminds me of the prejudiced view of the Orthodox Jews who believe that only men are allowed to touch the Torah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 1.35em; text-align: center; margin: 0px 0px 1em 0px;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1084\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mmoutreach.org\/wim\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/torah7.jpg?resize=427%2C285\" alt=\"torah7-Cheryl-Schatz on Women in Ministry\" width=\"427\" height=\"285\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Apparently touching the Bible by giving an explanation of the meaning of a passage now makes one an \u201cundercover enemy.\u201d \u00a0How far has the church fallen that some feel free to attack our sisters in Christ identifying them as enemies? \u00a0Notice that Seaver says nothing about whether the woman\u2019s teaching is correct or not. \u00a0He is lumping true Bible teaching in with error because it is the vessel which is the enemy, not the words that she speaks. \u00a0It is the mere fact that she would touch the Word of God in public that makes her an enemy. \u00a0This is the same tradition of the Pharisees who added a restriction on the teaching of God\u2019s Word.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 1em; line-height: 1.35em;\">Seavers goes on to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Semigalitarianism (Semi-Egalitarianism) is taking place all over the United States in churches that claim to believe in the Inerrancy of Scripture, but they seem to make an assumption that they can declare who has authority in the church to teach.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is the Word of God that has given the body of Christ authority to operate in our gifts. \u00a0Who dares to claim to have the authority to\u00a0<strong><em>deny<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0gifted members of the body of Christ who are living in union with Christ, the permission to teach? \u00a0Seavers appears to be one of the elite group of males who can deny permission:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>There is one major problem to this position. It is\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: mceinline;\">1 Timothy 2:12-13<\/span>where the Apostle Paul says, \u201cI do not permit a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. For Adam was formed first and then Eve.\u201d You see, this verse is in the Bible and to neglect this verse is to disobey the Bible and to disobey the Bible is to disobey the God of the Bible. The church is never given the right to say someone has authority to teach when the Bible says the exact opposite.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let\u2019s test Mike Seaver\u2019s words and see if they match up with the Bible.<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0Mr. Seaver has taken two verses out of their context and added a meaning that is not there. \u00a0Where does the Bible say that\u00a0<strong><em>women, in general,<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0are not given permission to teach the Bible?<\/p>\n<p>2. \u00a0How is it possible in the male patriarchial view for women to teach other women without a male supervising these women teachers thus there must be at least\u00a0<strong><em>some men<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0who are\u00a0<strong><em>required<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0to listen to women teach? \u00a0How does this fit in with 1 Timothy 2:12?<\/p>\n<p>3. \u00a0Where is the idea that a woman is not allowed to teach the Bible given a second or third witness in the scripture? \u00a0Why is every general prohibition repeated in the scriptures but the prohibition of women teaching the bible has no second witness?<\/p>\n<p>4. \u00a0Doesn\u2019t the\u00a0<strong><em>direct permission<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0given by Paul allowing every member to prophesy (so that all may learn from them), contradict an assumed and unconfirmed prohibition against godly Christian women\u2019s permission to explain the Bible? \u00a0Doesn\u2019t ignoring Paul\u2019s authority to allow women to teach in the assembly mean that one is disobeying the Bible and disobeying the God of the Bible?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1 Corinthians 14:31 \u00a0For\u00a0<strong>you can all prophesy<\/strong>\u00a0one by one, so that all may learn and all may be exhorted;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>5. \u00a0Doesn\u2019t Paul\u2019s permission for all to speak and prophesy in the convicting power of the Holy Spirit override any man-made rule that prohibits women from explaining God\u2019s Words from the Bible?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>1 Corinthians\u00a014:23 \u00a0Therefore\u00a0<strong>if the whole church assembles together<\/strong>\u00a0and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad?<\/p>\n<p>1 Corinthians\u00a014:24 \u00a0<strong>But if all prophesy<\/strong>, and an unbeliever or an ungifted man enters, he is\u00a0<strong>convicted by<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>all<\/strong>, he is\u00a0<strong>called to account by all<\/strong>;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Mike Seaver goes on to give his opinion about the clearness of the prohibition:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If we start trying to reinterpret one passage of Scripture, what stops us from reinterpreting the rest of it? The problem with Semigalitarianism is not just that it has females teaching men in a Sunday School class or from the pulpit, it is that it is ignoring a clear biblical passage.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Is this passage really \u201cclear\u201d? \u00a0If it is so clear to Mike Seaver, then I wonder why he stopped with verse 13? \u00a0 The passage is connected by the words \u201cfor\u201d \u201cand\u201d \u201cbut\u201d and \u201cif\u201d, so that the thought doesn\u2019t end until verse 15. \u00a0Why would Mike Seaver state that this passage is so \u201cclear\u201d when verse 15 is considered to be one of the hardest passages of scripture to understand? \u00a0Why would he state so confidently that this passage is \u201cclear\u201d yet ignore the completion of the passage in verse 15 that the church at large has grappled with for several thousand years not able to come to a consensus on what it means without the interpretations contradicting other \u201cclear\u201d bible passages? \u00a0If Mike Seaver thinks that this bible passage is so \u201cclear\u201d then perhaps he should present his interpretation of verse 15 which is written as the conclusion of the prohibition. \u00a0The fact that\u00a0<strong><em>he must remove verse 15<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0before he declares the passage to be \u201cclear.\u201d This is a \u201cclear\u201d sign that he is twisting the passage himself removing the\u00a0<strong><em>result<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0that Paul expects from his prohibition in verse 12. \u00a0If Mr. Seaver is reading this, I challenge him to show me his \u201cclear\u201d interpretation of verse 15 and explain to all of us how verse 15 fits neatly into Paul\u2019s prohibition.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I know many women who are excellent teachers (my wife being one of them) and they are to use their gifts to teach other women (Titus 2) and to care for their children, but there is a distinct absence in the Bible of a man promoting something opposite from what Paul says in 1 Timothy 2:12-13.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr. Seaver has interpreted 1 Timothy 2:12-13 out of its complete context in order to assert that men are not allowed to listen to women teaching the Bible. \u00a0If that is the case, then there can be no male overseers for the entire congregation (incuding women) since no man would be allowed to listen and judge what a woman is teaching in order to correct her. \u00a0Is he really saying that no overseer is allowed to listen to the insights from Scripture that a woman brings? \u00a0Then no male overseer can manage the household of God since they are restricted from listening to women teach. \u00a0We are left with a hopeless contradiction when we apply Mr. Seaver \u201cundercover enemy\u201d teaching.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Seaver sums up his article:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>So here are some questions we must ask\u2026because I think a lot of my conservative friends have not even thought through this issue.<\/p>\n<p>Can a woman be a senior pastor in a church?<br>\nCan a woman teach in a church?<br>\nCan a woman teach men in a church?<br>\nCan a woman teach in the church if she is under the authority of the senior pastor and her husband?<\/p>\n<p>When we step outside of the feminist air that we breathe everyday and into an honest look at what God\u2019s Word says, I don\u2019t think the answer is really that hard.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Notice that Mike Seaver says that there is an \u201canswer\u201d (singular) to these questions. \u00a0Apparently, his answer to these questions is a \u201cclear\u201d no. \u00a0But the questions have been skewed since \u201cchurch\u201d is never defined as a building in the scriptures and the term \u201csenior pastor\u201d is not a biblical term. \u00a0Instead of the questions Mr. Seavers asks, let\u2019s see how these questions should be asked from a biblical perspective.<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0Can a woman be an overseer protecting the body of Christ?
